Ibanez Jet King JTK2:
And the Ibanez ASB180 Semi-Hollow Bass:
Review of the Ibanez ASB180
[by Michael, owner]: It’s 90% impressive. The construction quality is pretty close to Gibson USA level. There is binding everywhere: f holes, headstock, etc. The inlays are nice. It’s substantial and heavy–it lacks the true semi-hollow feel that its construction might suggest. The scale is slightly shorter than a Fender-type bass.
The hardware is another plus: the tuners are top-notch, as is the bridge.
Where this bass falls short is the electronics and initial setup. First, the setup: the strings that come with this, D’Addario XL round wounds in .45 to .105, are completely inappropriate and way too bright for this bass. Like, who’s going to be popping and slapping on an enormous semi-hollow? I immediately made the switch for flatwounds, and immediately improved the sound which is fairly true to 60s or 70s soul and rock. The electronics are a disappointment. The tone knob does not roll off much bass at all, and leaves a pronounced midrange resonant circuit at its lowest setting.
But, it’s easy to modify electronics, but impossible to improve a poorly constructed guitar, so for the $399 I paid, I’d give it high marks.
